Meltimi winds in Serifos, Greece July 23, 2012

The summer of 2012 was a very windy summer in the Aegean. I’ve made this comment on previous posts but I thought I would post a video I took when I was an anchorage on the island of Serifos Greece. Fortunate for me when I arrived at the mole the winds were light and there was one small spot that I was able to squeeze into on the downwind side. I knew the prevailing winds were from the opposite side so I was able to squeeze into this side and ride out this windstorm in safety. Boats who came in after me either chose to anchor in the bay or back into the Windward side of the mole. As always seems to be the case the wind started blowing strongly that night and all night and all the next day those boats crews were up and doing what they could keep their boats from banging against the concrete. A few boats made what I thought was the prudent decision and that was to go out in the Bay and anchor. But most of boats were charter boats and crews perhaps did not realize anchoring in the bay was the safer of the two choices. I’m sure when they got back to the charter bases bills were presented for gelcoat and fiberglass work.
