I got a letter from marinedocumentation.us looking like an official Documentation Renewal from the Coast Guard. As it turns out it was a scam and they took me for $150. The Actual cost to renew your vessel from the US Coast Guard is $26. Learn from me and warn your friends!

I reported this government website look a like to the FTC and also its ISP godaddy.

I called the company to try and get my money back they gave me a fake email address to write to. When I asked for a physical address they refused to provide it but after much research here is the information on this scam company….

Turns out the Principal John Soria live in Chino CA and the company is registered in Montana.

Unfortunately I was initially fooled, but after some back and forth with my credit card company, I may be winning the dispute war. Win or lose, I’m just happy I am costing Vessel Documentation Online, LLC time and money responding, and hopefully causing issues with their merchant bank Chase….

Vessel Documentation Online, LLC’s tactics are pretty interesting. The response to my CC dispute doesn’t even reference the vesseldocumentation.us website and stated since they immediately charged my credit card, my application was “processed” and subject to their no refunds policy… that’s quite a business model!

I’m just blown away a US based company is performing this scheme using Chase for payments, GoDaddy for domain registration, Amazon for hosting, and a US digital agency Websitedepot. https://websitedepot.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/company/websites-depot-inc-web-design-&-seo/. I’m shocked none of these companies have issue with this as I filed complaints with all of them who seemed to be satisfied with the canned responses they received from Vessel Documentation Online, LLC stating they are a legitimate “documentation services company”.

I think it’s ultimately going to take either the FTC or a state attorney general to attempt to put an end to this scheme as it clearly falls under “false and misleading business practices”. Not sure if the level of complaints will ever be high enough for this to happen.

Looks like John Soria has been pretty busy suing former associates who are copying his business or in the cast of his former webmaster, literally stealing it.
